Happy Friday 5V Parents!
Even though it was a short week with no school on Monday, and a delay after the snow storm, we got A LOT of amazing work done in room 504 this week!
Just a reminder that we will be attending UAlbany's Commitment to Education day on Wednesday (1/24). Students will need to bring a bagged lunch that day. They can bring money for the concession stand, but the lines are veryyyyy long, and I wouldn't want them to run out of time waiting in line, and not get a chance to eat. The concession stand is also limited in what it sells (candy, popcorn, pretzels). During our visit, we will spend time touring the athletic facilities, meeting with some of the student athletes, and will end the day by watching the UAlbany women's basketball team take on Vermont at 11:00. We will be eating lunch in the stands while we watch the game. It is a really fun day!
Here's a look at what we worked on this week:
Reading: In reader's workshop, we spent the week focusing on how the author chooses to use time in their story, specifically focusing on the Historical Fiction books we have read. We talked about how some stories are told over a few hours, or a few days, or even years. We also discussed how in stories like, Faithful Elephants, the author can use flashbacks or go back in time throughout a story. It's important to understand the use of time so that you really understand the plot of a story. We also read Patricia Polacco's story, Pink and Say, which is a story based on actual events that she learned from her great grandfather. It is the story of two soldiers during the Civil War. It tied in perfectly with our US History section that we are working on this week-The Civil War. I also finished up my mid year benchmarking, so we will be getting back into guided reading groups next week. Students are making EXCELLENT growth as readers and as THINKERS!
Math: In math, we continued our discussion on dividing decimals. We looked at dividing decimals with a whole number as the divisor, and also dividing with a decimal divisor. Students are doing a great job with this concept. We will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday, and will take the chapter 5 test on Thursday!
Writing/S.S./STEM: This week, we worked on a really cool project that combined our study of the Westward Expansion, the use of the Ozobots, and our engineering skills. This collaborative project aligned with our work from the c~cubed program. This week, students broke into groups to make a "living" and interactive timeline of four important events from the westward expansion period. Students worked collaboratively to come up with a creative way to take their classmates through these events. They used the robots to send their classmates on the journey, and programmed the robots to complete specific commands during the journey. They used legos to engineer a structure that represented their "stop" on the timeline. Each time the robot came to a stop, a student would provide some background information on that specific event.
I cannot tell you how amazing these came out! I video taped all of the timelines in action, so I will be sharing these this week. This project brought together so many higher level skills, and really highlighted many parts of what our c~cubed (enrichment) program hopes to attain: helping students use Curiosity, Collaboration, and Creativity (hence, c~cubed!). We are putting together a short video that will be shared at the February Share and Celebrate to show our learning community some of the great things our c~cubed program helps us attain!
